Everyone would love a job where he/she gets paid to be handsome or beautiful. That exactly what a model does! Think again. The modeling industry is something fit for few because of its stark competition. However, there are those chosen ones who are ready for battle and can stand resolute in their modeling pursuits! This article will give you some killer tips for launching a lucrative career in modelling.
Before thinking of becoming a model you must consider this.
1. Know Yourself and your Industry
The first and foremost step to becoming a model or a successful model is to know yourself. When I mean know yourself and your industry! You have to be fully aware of all the different lines of modeling and where you are good at. For example, someone who is good at acting and the art of persuasion would likely fair better if they pursued a career in commercial modeling, being in on screen advertisements.
Someone who is better at dance or interpretative movement would likely be better at runway modeling. An extremely photogenic woman would likely be best at editorial modeling. It is possible to cross over into different fields of modeling throughout your career. However, it is always your best bet to have a good track record with one particular avenue to begin with. If you are a Jack of All Trades, you can master nothing.
2. Make research about your style of modelling
Once you choose your target, you need to further research what is involved in the job as well as how you can optimize your marketability. The biggest mistake that aspiring models make is "not doing the research beforehand." Not sure where to start? Aaron suggests that "One should check to see who is reputable first, length in the buisness, and who an agency represents."
Go online search about other models in the same line or those who are already doing big in that same line of modelling, know what it takes and how they became so big. Also ask questions about your style of modelling.
Look for an agent by flipping through your favorite magazine spreads and making a note of which agency represents the models you like. If you're looking into a smaller agency, do some internet research before giving them a call to make sure they have a good reputation in the industry.
3. Be Prepared
After you have made research on your style of modelling and have gotten more knowledge about your style of modelling, you need to plan yourself on how to start.
"Classes can be helpful to individuals in terms of self confidence and comfort with aspects of the business," says Aaron, though he emphasizes that classes are by no means a prerequisite. Consider the option if you feel like you have something that's holding you back, lack knowledge of the industry, or if you're in need of a confidence boost. And like with any job, read up on the agency you're interviewing with, including past and present models signed with them and company news.
4. Start Young
Your next tip is to start as young as possible! This is because you will build a long portfolio and strong experience. Most super models started in the industry under the age of 13. When starting as a child, you “grow up” in the industry. This is attractive to most designers because they are assured that you know what you are doing and will represent their line or product to the highest standard. However, this is something you certainly need to discuss with your parents if you are a minor. Modeling is a “come and go” career, so likely a lot of travel and some expenses will be involved. Also, parents must consent to minors contracting with different agencies, designers and photographers.
5. Exhaust Every Resource
In these times, the Internet is the largest source of information. Because of this, you want to be sure that you take advantage of social media. Social media is one of the most effective marketing tools because almost every one has it. You, as a model, want to be sure that you are using social media to its fullest potential and exhausting all resources! You want to create an account on every relevant social network that you can and stay active on those accounts.
Active would preferably mean a daily update, however you want to visit once a week on a minimum. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and even YouTube are all avenues for self-promotion. Beware of what you post because you want your pages to be professional with a touch of personal, not vice-versa. Sharing information about personal feuds, relationship statuses and or overly emotional situations may hurt your career.
6. Take Professional Pictures
As career model or one who seeks a career in modelling, always take professional pictures regular, this will help build a good portfolio. Your model career is like a story which tells through your pictures. When thinking of hooking up with a modelling agency you need to bring some casual shots as well. When we meet with prospective models we ask to see a couple of snapshots or Polaroids. A simple headshot, bodyshot, profile, and a smile is good. Keep your clothes simple so they don't distract from your shape and face, and play around with different poses and facial expressions.
7. Be Yourself
So you've booked a meeting with an agent — now what? Resist the temptation to paint on new eyebrows or shop for a new outfit before your interview. I will advice you always come as you are. If you have a quirky look or style naturally, work that! Don't be concerned about changing who you are to impress an agency. When meeting prospective models we prefer to see them as they are: no makeup, natural hair, and their personality." Leave the flowing maxi-dress at home and keep your outfit simple: "Body-conscious clothing like skinny jeans and a tank are good so we can see the body."
8. Speak Up
Personality is key, so sit up straight and spit out that gum! Aaron says, "An outgoing personality is always a standout." They're looking for models who are "able to express themselves and not be nervous or shy. A feeling that modeling is something they want to do, rather than something they are being pushed into is key." He says that "the models that do well are confident, ambitious, and have a certain humbleness about the fact that being genetically gifted is what got them in the business," says Aaron. "In the end this is a business and respect and professionalism is really important." Arrive for your audition or interview early and ready — no scrambling to rearrange your book in the elevator!
9. Read Before Signing on the Dotted Line
If you've impressed the agency enough to get an offer, take a deep breath before doing a celebratory dance and signing a contract. "Do not sign anything without reading first!" Aaron says. "Do your research, and just go with what your gut tells you." Make sure any questions you have about your contract are answered and clarified before you sign.
Also Note! Important Questions you need to answer
Although it may seem like modeling is simply posing and smiling, there is a lot of business involved. When considering a modeling career, you have many decisions that you have to choose.

- Are you prepared to manage your own finances or will you hire an accountant?
- Are you good at budgeting, saving money, investing and forecasting?
- How many hours are you willing to work, and if exceeded will you demand over time?
- Will you be an hourly model or a fixed price model?
- Will you use modeling as a stepping stone to other business ventures such as starting your own fashion line, modeling school or even a TV program?

It is highly advised that you educate yourself on basic business savvy by taking a couple of classes and reading up. This is not to say you need a university degree. However, it would be smart to look into some local community college courses that can give you the same information for a fraction of the price.
